FOOTBALL STARS READY TO SHINE

Three of the top-five football recruits in the state, as picked by the Roanoke Times & World-News, will participate in the Virginia High School Coaches' Association East-West all-star game scheduled for July 12 in Lynchburg.

Bassett's Maurice DeShazo will be at quarterback and E.C. Glass' Reuben Brown will play defensive tackle for the West. The third top-five player, Hampton's Aaron Mundy, will be a split receiver for the East.

The other two top players - Potomac quarterback B.J. Hawkins and fullback-linebacker Bill Henderson of Thomas Dale - will not play. Hawkins is attending summer school at Notre Dame, and Henderson is still recuperating from knee surgery before he attends the University of North Carolina.

DeShazo, the All-Timesland quarterback and Group AA player of the year, will attend Virginia Tech. Brown has signed with Pittsburgh, and Mundy, a three-sport star at Hampton, is going to the University of Virginia.

Two of the state's four Associated Press players of the year will participate in the game, both for the West team. Charles Garner of J.E.B. Stuart was selected Group AAA player of the year at running back, and DeShazo was picked as the Group AA player of the year at quarterback.

The other two AP honorees - Group A co-players of the year Chris Williams and Tim Williams of Bath County - will miss the game. Chris Williams is participating in the all-star baseball game and will attend James Madison on a baseball scholarship. Tim Williams is not eligible yet because he has just completed his junior year; the summer all-star game is restricted to players who have completed their senior year.

The football game is a rematch of coaching rivalries - Courtland's Ken Brown will lead the East and Blacksburg's Dave Crist will coach the West. Their teams met for the Group AA Division 4 championship last fall with the Indians winning 19-6. Brown's Courtland team beat Blacksburg 13-10 for the 1985 championship.
