GARBAGE BY RAIL ALSO CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS

ROANOKE COUNTY has a progressive recycling campaign and should be proud of it. But it is disturbing that the county leaders are considering transporting garbage to the landfill by railroad car.

It is true that trucks transporting garbage cause damage to roads and other problems. Rail transportation could lead to problems as bad or worse. Most other landfill operations use rail transport to haul out-of-state garbage to rural communities such as Roanoke.

The trend is for railroad companies to get involved in garbage-hauling. Ask folks in West Virginia and Southwestern Virginia about coal going out and trash coming back in on these rail cars. PETE D. CASTELLI III Citizen's Clearinghouse for Hazardous Wastes, Appalachia CHRISTIANSBURG
