Tim McDowell gave up the homer after relieving Stan Fansler, who had a one-hitter through seven innings but left because of his pitch count.
Fansler walked the first two batters and had the bases loaded in the first but got Hernandez to fly out to end the threat. Nobody else got past first until the ninth-inning homer.
Salem (1-2) has gone 22 straight scoreless innings. The Cannons (2-1) are over .500 for the first time and in first place for the first time.
The Buccaneers travel to Lynchburg to play the Red Sox tonight.
