WOMAN APPOINTED TO VMI VISITOR BOARD

A Richmond woman was appointed to the Virginia Military Institute Board of Visitors on Monday, becoming only the second female board member in the all-male school's history.

Ann Adams Webster's appointment was announced along with 41 others by Gov. Douglas Wilder's office.

Michelle Prosser, the governor's deputy press secretary, said Brig. Gen. Elizabeth Hoisington is the only other female to serve on the VMI board. Hoisington's term expires in 1993.

Unlike Hoisington, Webster has no military background. She has a Ph.D. in politics from Princeton and a law degree from Harvard. Webster is a partner in the Richmond law firm Morris and Morris. She succeeds Robert Spillman on the board.

The federal Justice Department and VMI are embroiled in a legal battle over whether the state-supported school should be able to keep its all-male admissions policy.

Reached by telephone at her Richmond home Monday night, Webster would not comment on the all-male policy. "It would be extremely premature for me to take a position on anything at this point," she said.

Wilder also appointed William B. Berry of Richmond to the board, replacing B. Powell Harrison Jr. Reappointed to the VMI board were Daniel F. Flowers of Houston and Sam E. Woolwine of Richmond. All the terms are for four years.
