MAN FACES CHARGES OF ROBBERY, ASSAULT

A 27-year-old man wanted by police in Staunton on rape and robbery charges has been charged in Roanoke with kicking in the door of a Patterson Avenue resident and robbing him.

William E. Beitz, 54, of the 1500 block of Patterson Avenue Southwest, and a neighbor, Kenneth Stewart, were on the front porch of Beitz's apartment building about 9 p.m. Sunday when a man approached them and threatened to rob them, Roanoke authorities said Tuesday.

Beitz and Stewart went into Beitz's apartment and locked the door. But the man kicked the door open and demanded money, police said.

The man kicked Stewart in the face, causing him to fall through a window, and then kicked Beitz in the chest, authorities said.

The man took $2 from Beitz's wallet, grabbed a portable television set and fled.

Phillip Jerome Smith was charged with burglary, robbery, larceny and assault.
