Jeffrey Wayne Dickerson, 31, of Abbott Street Northwest told police Tuesday morning that he had been walking on 11th Street at about 10 p.m. when several men who had been sitting on a wall jumped off and began to beat him.
Dickerson said he was knocked to the sidewalk and the men continued to kick him. At least one of the men had an object in his hand and struck Dickerson on the head with it, authorities said. Dickerson told police he did nothing to provoke the attack.
Authorities have said that other recent attacks in the area of 11th Street appeared to be racially motivated. But authorities said Dickerson is black and reported that the men who beat him were black.
Dickerson told police that the men left him when a car carrying his friends arrived at the scene.
Dickerson was treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital Monday for injuries to his head and left leg, authorities said. He was not seriously injured, police said.
