UVA GOLFER TOPS QUALIFIERS

University of Virginia senior Fred Widicus, playing on his home course away from home, shot a par-72 Thursday and captured the qualifying medal in the State Amateur golf tournament with a 36-hole score of 141.

"I started hitting the ball a little better on the back - more solid and straighter," said the 19-year-old Annandale resident. Widicus recorded a 35-37 round over the 6,820-yard Birdwood Golf Club course, where the Cavaliers play their home matches.

His round was just good enough to edge 1988 champion Keith Decker of Martinsville and 28-year-old mortgage banker Mike Matthews of Oakton by one shot. Decker had his second consecutive 71 and Matthews, state collegiate champion at Virginia Tech in 1983 and 1984, had a 70.
