Avis Brown of the Rivermont Apartments suffered multiple cuts and bruises to her head, face and legs and was listed in satisfactory condition at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville-Henry County.
She was assaulted about 5:30 p.m. by three boys, ages 9, 8 and 6, who also live in the apartment complex, said Police Chief Terry Roop.
Brown was found lying on her floor and bleeding after a neighbor had telephoned police.
Roop said a tree branch several feet long and several inches in diameter and several rocks were found in the apartment. One of the rocks weighed more than a pound.
No motive was given. Roop said nothing had been stolen from the apartment and there was no sign of forced entry.
Brown apparently knew the boys, he said.
No arrests had been made Thursday. But Roop said police have three suspects and expect to issue felonious assault petitions against them within a few days.
Because the suspects are juveniles, Roop said the boys probably will not be jailed after the petitions are served, but will remain with their parents.
