The house provides a "home away from home" for families from distant communities with relatives hospitalized or receiving outpatient treatment in Roanoke. In most Ronald McDonald houses the families cook for themselves; Roanoke's house, staffed by volunteers, prepares meals for its 30 to 40 guests.
"If you have somebody in the hospital, just to . . . have your dinner here in a family atmosphere and share your burden makes a world of difference," manager Mary McKinstry said.
The kitchen was dedicated in the memory of Gary Taylor, a McDonald's owner/operator who operated a franchise in Altavista.
