Don Sawyer, assistant manager for Eagle Eyrie, at first said seven to 10 children had been taken to Lynchburg General Hospital late in the afternoon for heat-related injuries.
But hospital officials several hours later reported that 20 Eagle Eyrie children had been hospitalized for heat exhaustion. Most had been released by midnight, hospital officials said.
Sawyer said a few of the children collapsed about 4:30 p.m. on the softball field during relay races. After the first children collapsed, a "panic situation" developed and other children were taken to the hospital with similar symptoms, he said.
The temperature rose to 88 degrees Thursday with 45 percent humidity.
Eagle Eyrie is a Southern Baptist Convention-owned conference center.
