PILOTS POUND BUCS WITH BIG FIRST INNING

The Peninsula Pilots scored nine runs before the Bucs could record two outs in the first inning and went on to pound out a 19-9 victory over Salem in Carolina League baseball Thursday night at Municipal Field.

Salem starter Steve Buckholz (6-6) lasted one-third of an inning and gave up nine earned runs on eight hits.

Peninsula sent 13 batters to the plate in the first and put the game out of reach. The Pilots (5-2) scored four runs in the second when nine came to bat, and six runs in the sixth when they sent 11 men to the plate.

The Bucs (3-4) scored single runs in the first, second, third and fifth innings. Chris Estep hit his league-leading 12th homer, a two-run shot in the eighth, and reliever Chip Duncan, batting because of an injury to center fielder Mike Brewington, hit a three-run homer to pull the Bucs to 19-9.

\ BUCSHOTS: Brewington was injured when he and Estep collided while chasing a fly ball. Brewington's face hit one of Estep's knees, and the outfielder had to be taken to Lewis-Gale Hospital to treat facial cuts. . . . Shortstop Mike Huyler has been promoted to Harrisburg of the Class AA Eastern League. Huyler is the third Buc to be promoted to Harrisburg this season. Also, first baseman Bill Holmes has been promoted from Augusta (Ga.) to Salem. Right-handed pitcher Roger Williams has joined Salem after pitching for Mexico City. . . . Stan Fansler (0-3) is scheduled to pitch for the Bucs tonight as they continue the series with the Pilots. Jim Gutierrez (4-8) will start for Peninsula.
