DECK REPAIR TO CLOSE FRANKLIN ROAD BRIDGE

The Franklin Road bridge over the Norfolk and Western Railway tracks in Roanoke will be closed Saturday and Sunday because of repairs to the bridge's deck.

The bridge will be closed at 4 a.m. Saturday and reopen by 7 a.m. Monday.

The contractor will be pouring concrete and allowing it to dry this weekend, said Jack Woodson, a city engineer. The bridge will also be closed for another two weekends in the next two months.

"They'll pour one-third of the deck each weekend the bridge is closed," Woodson said.

If the concrete dries by late Sunday afternoon, the bridge might reopen then, he said, but it is scheduled to be reopened early Monday morning.

The detour route will follow Reserve Avenue, Jefferson Street and Williamson Road.

Northbound motorists on Franklin Road will be detoured east onto Reserve Avenue, then north on Jefferson Street to Williamson Road and then north on Williamson Road to Franklin Road, where they will pick up the existing route. Southbound motorists will follow the same detour route in reverse order.

The contractor, Lanford Brothers Inc., has been awarded a $481,293 contract for rehabilitation of the bridge.
