ROANOKE ECONOMY UP 4.4 IN MAY

Roanoke was one of five Virginia cities with "above average consumer demand growth" in May when the rest of the state was slowing down, according to a new economic report. The Virginia Business Report produced by the College of William and Mary said Roanoke's economy grew 4.4 percent over May 1989's level, based on eight business indicators.

The Newport News-Hampton area led the state with an 11 percent growth rate. Staunton was up 5.3 percent, Charlottesville rose 4.8 percent and Lynchburg was up 4.1 percent. Northern Virginia's economic indicators were up a slim 2.6 percent and declines were reported for Norfolk, Richmond, Williamsburg, Petersburg, Harrisonburg, Bristol and the Eastern Shore.
