The victory put the Bucs in a three-way tie for first place with Frederick and Lynchburg in the Northern Division at 4-4.
Salem combined pitching and defense until the offense came up with the big hit. Tim Hines' two-out double scored Bruce Schreiber in the 11th to wipe out the Bucs' 19-9 loss in the series' opener.
"The way we've been playing in the second half, we're right where we should be," said Stan Cliburn, the Salem manager. "I know we're 4-4, but we could easily be 7-1.
"In the first half, we might let a loss like that [the 19-9 setback] carry over three or four days. Now we take the attitude that yesterday is over and we come out to play a good game today."
Salem starter Stan Fansler pitched six strong innings before being removed because he is on a pitch limit. Tim McDowell pitched one-hit ball and retired the final 10 men.
Fansler, who left the game in a 2-2 tie, might have been behind had it not been for a great play from Chris Estep in right field. With runners on the corners in the fifth inning, Estep caught Bret Boone's fly and nailed Jorge Robles at home.
"I thought Estep's play changed the tempo of the game," Cliburn said. "McDowell pitched well once again. In those two losses on the road, he threw as well as he did tonight."
\ BUCSHOTS: Mike Brewington, injured in a collision Thursday night, is lost 4-6 weeks with contusions on his cheekbone and a broken jaw. . . . Tim Wakefield (4-7) pitches for Salem tonight against the Pilots' Mark Czarkowski (2-1).
