FRANKLIN RD. BRIDGE CLOSED FOR REPAIRS

The Franklin Road bridge over the Norfolk and Western Railway tracks in Roanoke will be closed today and Sunday because of repairs to its deck.

The contractor will be pouring concrete and allowing it to dry this weekend, said Jack Woodson, a city engineer. The bridge also will be closed for another two weekends in the next two months.

"They'll pour one-third of the deck each weekend the bridge is closed," Woodson said.

If the concrete dries by late Sunday afternoon, the bridge might reopen then, he said. It is scheduled to reopen by 7 a.m. Monday.

The detour route will follow Reserve Avenue, Jefferson Street and Williamson Road.

Lanford Brothers Inc. has been awarded a $481,293 contract for rehabilitation of the bridge.
