MAYOR TAKES LEAVE UNTIL CHARGES RESOLVED

Mayor David I. Wynne took a leave from office Monday until the felony fraud charge against him is resolved, becoming the first Chesapeake mayor to leave office before the end of his term.

The mayoral duties will be handled by Vice Mayor William E. Ward.

Wynne was indicted July 3 on a felony charge of obtaining money under false pretenses, with intent to defraud.

The charge stems from his alleged solicitation of a $1,000 check from the Sumitomo Machinery Corp. and his use of the money to satisfy a travel debt he owed the city.

Ward pledged to bring the council members and residents together in Wynne's absence.
