The fund drive will officially kick off Sept. 11.
The goal is a 6.9 percent increase over what United Way raised in 1989.
Last year, United Way raised just over $4.3 million, about 99 percent of its goal and an increase of 7.2 percent over the year before.
At a news conference today, United Way officials also explained a new wrinkle in their campaign - an expansion of their "donor choice" program.
In the past, donors could designate their contribution for a specific United Way agency.
But now donors can also designate their gift to Roanoke Valley health and human services agencies that are not United Way members. They must be non-profit agencies that meet state and federal requirements.
Some organizations are not eligible for funding under the expanded program. These include churches, schools, foundations, arts or cultural groups and political organizations.
United Way officials say they expect about 2 percent of the money they raise to go to non-United Way agencies.
