MANUFACTURING FALLS IN FIRST QUARTER

Virginia manufacturing activity dropped 1.2 percent in the first quarter after seven consecutive quarters of growth, according to an index compiled by the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.

The index fell as the result of declines in factory employment and in electricity consumption in factories, the bank said.
