DAY LEADS U.S. TEAM IN BASKETBALL EXHIBITION

Arkansas forward Todd Day sparked a 15-4 run that led the United States national basketball team to a 117-106 victory over a group of former Duke players in an exhibition game Thursday night.

A capacity crowd of more than 9,000 crammed into non-air conditioned Cameron Indoor Stadium for the U.S. team's first outside competition. The team, coached by Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, will compete in the Goodwill Games later this month in Seattle, then go to the World Championships next month in Argentina.

The United States, with 16 players on the roster during this week's camp at Duke, must be down to 15 for the Goodwill Games and 12 for the World Championships. Krzyzewski said he may cut one to three players as early as this weekend and no later than Monday.

Day, a 6-foot-8, 195-pounder, made his bid for the team by scoring 15 points. He made four of seven shots in 13 minutes.

Georgetown's Alonzo Mourning led the United States with 19 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots in 19 minutes. - Staff report
