WILDER REVIEWS ABC CHIEF'S REAPPOINTMENT

Gov. Douglas Wilder will announce soon whether he will reappoint a state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board member who has been criticized by restaurant owners for strictly enforcing liquor laws, Wilder's spokeswoman said Friday.

Jay Cochran Jr., the board's chief of enforcement, is up for reappointment along with Chairwoman Gladys Bailey Harris and J. David Shobe Jr.

"He has been conducting his own very careful review of the ABC board," said the governor's press secretary, Laura Dillard. But she said the review was not in response to complaints about overly strict enforcement of liquor laws.

Under Cochran, the board has cracked down on a variety of liquor license violations, including sales to underage drinkers and gambling and illegal drug operations.
