MAN JUMPS FROM ROPE, DROWNS IN CLAYTOR

A Pulaski County man drowned in Claytor Lake Monday night after swinging from a rope on a tree into the water, Pulaski County Sheriff Frank Conner said this morning.

Jesse Samuel Lane, 25, of Route 1, Pulaski, had been swimming about 7:15 p.m. with friends in a cove at the public boat launch near Claytor Lake State Park.

The group had been swinging from the rope into the water. Witnesses told rescue workers that after Lane jumped into the water they did not see him come back up, a rescue squad spokesman said Monday.

Rescue divers arrived minutes later but did not find Lane's body until about 7:50 in about 20 feet of water. He had been under for about 20 minutes, Conner said.

Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful and Lane was taken to Radford Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

It was the second drowning this summer at Claytor Lake and the sixth in the New River Valley.
