2 MEN CHARGED WITH RAPING RUNAWAY GIRLS

Roanoke police have charged two men with the statutory rape of two runaway girls, ages 12 and 14.

The police said today that Felipe Garcia Mendoza, 18, and Antonio Padilla Perez, 25, were arrested Wednesday after an investigation by Youth Bureau detectives.

Police said the offenses, which happened in a Northwest Roanoke apartment, started in the late hours of Tuesday night and continued until 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Police were called to investigate after the girls reported the offenses at Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem.

The girls told police that they had gone to visit a 13-year-old friend in the 2600 block of Westover Avenue Southwest and were introduced to the two men.

The men took the girls to an apartment and showed them a pornographic movie shortly before the alleged rapes occurred, police said.

Mendoza and Perez told police that they purchased immigration green cards from another state after entering the country from Mexico.

Police said one of the victims was a runaway from a Salem center where she had been receiving treatment; the other was a runaway from Bedford.
