HEIRONIMUS OPENING SET

Heironimus, the 100-year-old, Roanoke-based department store chain, said it will open on Aug. 7 at West Salem's Spartan Square shopping center. It will be the company's seventh department store but its first in Salem.

The 38,000-square-foot store will be in a building previously occupied by K mart and will employ about 40 people, said Richard Lynn, president of the chain.

"We're really excited about Salem," Lynn said. "The people seem genuinely interested in having us there and that makes us happy."

Salem is a viable market because it has fewer retail outlets than in nearby towns and its residents often travel to Roanoke or elsewhere to shop, he said.

Heironimus has four Roanoke stores and one store each in Blacksburg and Lynchburg. The retailer also operates nine Petite Place stores in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. - Staff report
