TULTEX SHOWS EARNINGS JUMP IN FISCAL PERIOD

Tultex Corp. of Martinsville Thursday reported first-half earnings of $1.2 million, up from a loss of $1 million a year ago, as the result of record sales of $137.5 million. Sales of the active-wear maker were $103.8 million a year ago. Earnings equaled 4 cents per share this year, compared to a loss of 4 cents per share a year ago.

In the second quarter, Tultex earnings were $3.5 million, up from $517,000 last year; sales for the quarter were $80.1 million, up from $57.3 million. Per-share earnings rose to 12 cents, compared with 2 cents a year earlier.
