REPORT: EXPANSIONS OPEN JOBS

Companies announcing new operations or expansions in Western Virginia in the second quarter said they will bring 835 new jobs - 22 percent of the 3,805 new jobs reported in the state during the period. The state total of job announcements was almost 6 percent more than a year ago, according to the Department of Economic Development.

New manufacturing plants announced in Western Virginia were by Cross Creek Apparel at Wytheville, to employ 250 people, and Woodtech in Tazewell, promising 100 jobs.

Expansions in Western Virginia included: Advance Auto Parts, 70 jobs; and Quibell, 65, both in Roanoke; Optical Cable, Roanoke County, 30; MW Manufacturers, Rocky Mount, 150; Kingston-Warren, Wytheville, 75; Cross Creek Apparel, Carroll County, 20; Fournier Furniture, Wise County, 100; and Qualtex, Lee County, 75.

Foreign companies accounted for five new locations and five expansions, bringing 705 new jobs and more than $76.5 million in investment, the department said.
