TOP SEEDS KNOCKED OUT OF USTA

The United State Tennis Association Women's Circuit of Roanoke began with the top two seeds getting knocked out of the tournament.

On Sunday, Lihini Weerasuriya of Sri Lanka, the tournament's top seed, was bounced by American Genevive Hyacinthe 6-3, 2-6, 6-0. Anne Stephenson, the No. 2 seed, was knocked off by fellow American Paula Juels 6-1, 6-0.

A free tennis clinic, which will be open to the public, and a Pro-Am Round Robin will be feature attractions as qualifying continues today at 9 a.m. at Hunting Hills.

The Pro-Am will showcase eight local men amateurs playing mixed doubles with eight of the women pros from the circuit. Bob Boling, Hank Brabham, Mel Fiel, Dave Flanagan, Arnold Masinter, Lu Merritt Jr., Tony Provenzano and Hugh Sawyer are scheduled to participate in the event.

A feature qualifying match will start at 6 p.m. and be followed by the Pro-Am event. The clinic will begin at 9 p.m. - Staff report
