LINDSEY, MARY P. \ SMITHFIELD - Mary Preston Lindsey, age 92, of 200 Lumar

Rd., died Thursday, January 31, 1991, in Riverside Convalescent Center, Smithfield. Mrs. Lindsey was born at Greenfield, the ancestral home built by Col. William Preston in 1760 in Botetourt County near Fincastle, Va. She was educated at Buchanan High Schol and what it is now Longwood College. She served in the United States Navy during World War I as a Yeomanette. She was a public school teacher for several years before her marriage to Evans W. Lindsey, professor of French and Greek at Roanoke College. Since his death in 1958, she resided in Charlottesville and Smithfield, Va. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Smithfield. Survivors include three daughters, Alice L. Peters, Salem, Va.; Anne L. Newton, Harrisonburg, Va.; Lida L. Jones, Smithfield, Va.; one brother, Robert B. Preston, Fincastle, Va.; eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 3, 1991, at Christ Episcopal Church, Smithfield, with Rector F. William Lantz officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence of the daughter, Lida Jones at 309 Red Point Drive, Smithfield, and suggests memorial donations may be made to the Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 97, Smithfield, Va. 23430. Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, will handle the arrangements.
