HOUSE TO RESURRECT LIQUOR-AT-THE-LAKE BILL

In a surprise action, the House of Delegates reversed its position and killed a measure to allow Franklin County voters close to Smith Mountain Lake to vote whether to allow liquor by the drink to be sold.

On a 49-48 vote, the House answered the plea of Del. Willard Finney, D-Rocky Mount, who opposed the measure, sponsored by Roanoke Democrat Clifton Woodrum.

However, the issue may not be dead. Moments after the vote, which many in the House said was a courtesy to Finney, who represents the area, the House agreed to reconsider the original vote on a motion by Del. Pete Giesen, R-Augusta.

Thus, the measure comes back before the House today.

The bill would allow localities to vote for liquor by the drink by magisterial district. In Franklin County, where countywide referendums on liquorsales have failed twice in the past decade, voters in the two districts closest to the lake have approved the sales.
