The identification of Sarah J. Compton, 66, was made by the state medical examiner's office after an intensive scrutiny of the remains by an anthropologist and other specialists.
Acting on a tip, sheriff's deputies from Madison and Culpeper counties found a jawbone and other remains Jan. 25 in a wooded area of Madison County. Other remains were found about 150 yards from where jawbone was found, officials said.
In recent months, authorities have conducted frequent searches in Culpeper, Orange and Madison counties for Compton, 66, of the Reva community.
She was last seen at a Food Lion store in Culpeper's Meadowbrook Shopping Center.
"This is the type of case where you don't let any lead get away," Madison County Sheriff Robert C. Russell said.
Law enforcement officials would not say how they received the tip to search in Madison County.
Russell said investigators will scour the area through the weekend.
Eleven days after her disappearance, police recovered Compton's purse in a ditch along Virginia 230 in Madison Mills. Police said there was no money in the purse and identification was missing.
