GALAX - Robert T. (Bob) Porter of 901 West Stuart Drive, Galax, Va., age 82, died at 10:55 a.m. Sunday, February 3, 1991, at the Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. He was born in Independence, Va., October 29, 1908, the son of W.L. Porter and Claudia Gambill Porter. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Galax, having served as a deacon and in many other capacities. He was a prominent businessman in Galax and active in numerous civic organizations including the Lions Club, Galax Moose Lodge, and U.C.T. He was president of Porter Furniture Company and active in various furniture organizations. He is survived by his wife, Louise Hennis Porter, Galax; son and daughter-in-law, Robert Ward Porter and Diane J. Porter of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one stepson, Harvey G. Hennis Jr. and wife, Judy P. Hennis, Galax; stepdaughter, Betty H. Parks and husband, Brice Parks, Galax; two grandsons, Robert Ward Porter Jr., Raleigh, N.C.; John Michael Porter, Winston-Salem, N.C.; three stepgrandsons, James B. Parks Jr., Galax; Edgar Gray Parks, Galax; Christopher Gray Hennis, Galax; and one stepgranddaughter, Anne Hennis Smith, Galax. He is also survived by a nephew and niece, Joseph W. Stacy Jr., Roanoke, and Joan Stacy Firehammer, Fredericksburg. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Galax with interment in the Felts Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Robert Ward Porter Jr., John Michael Porter, James B. Parks Jr., Edgar Gray Parks, Christopher Gray Hennis, and Jeff T. Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Porter Furniture Company (former and current), Galax Lions Club, and his many golfing friends. The family requests memorials be made to the Galax Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad. Visitation will be Monday at the First Baptist Church in Galax from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home, Galax, is in charge of arrangements.
