LONESOME PINE LIBRARY HIRES DIRECTOR

A former Abingdon resident who worked at the Smyth-Bland Regional Library from 1972 to 1977 has been hired as the new director of the Lonesome Pine Regional Library of nine libraries in four Southwest Virginia counties.

Ricky Johnson, who grew up in Abingdon, is now director of the Vienna (W.Va.) Public Library. She will start work here March 18, succeeding Theda Gibson who retired last summer after 25 years as Lonesome Pine's director.

The system is the state's second-largest regional library, covering Wise, Lee, Dickenson and Scott counties and the city of Norton. It dates back to 1963.

Johnson also worked for three years as library development director with the Virginia Library System. She has a degree in foreign studies from Mary Washington College and a master's in library science from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. - Southwest bureau
