Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon, was elected chairman of the Science Subcommittee of the Science, Space and Technology Committee.
He said the role will help him assist Virginia Tech with federally funded research projects.
The subcommittee has authority over the federal government's spending for basic science research and mathematics, science and engineering education programs.
It has jurisdiction over all programs of the National Science Foundation.
Rep. Jim Olin, D-Roanoke, was named vice chairman of two agriculture subcommittees: the Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Subcommittee and the Forests, Family Farms and Energy Subcommittee.
Olin also was elected Region 5 representative for the Democratic Study Group.
Sen. John Warner, R-Va., was named a member of the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration. He previously served on the committee from 1981 to 1989.
