ROANOKE RIPS GENERALS 111-88

Roanoke College took off like a rocket, slowed a bit in mid-flight, then turned on the afterburners for an 111-88 rout of archrival Washington and Lee in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference basketball game Saturday night at the Bast Center.

After a stellar first half in which they scored 61 points and shot 60 percent, the Maroons saw W&L cut an 11-point deficit to 78-76 with 10:41 remaining.

However, Roanoke out-gunned the Generals 33-12 to put the game away. Rick Becker started the run with two free throws. Senior Rodney Spickard made a 3-pointer and, after a W&L miss, he added a transition layup to get the Maroons running.

"I'm real proud of them," Roanoke coach Page Moir said. "We've played real good basketball the last four games, even though we didn't win all of them. They've worked hard and now good things are starting to happen for them."

The 111 points was a season-high for the Maroons, who shot 55.1 percent for the game.

Senior guard Ron Pendleton continued his hot play for Roanoke with a game-high 24 points and 10 assists. Becker had 20 points to go with 10 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double.

Robert Lineburg scored 14 points, and Spickard came off the bench with 11.

"We seem to always put things together this time of year," Pendleton said. "It's happened like that since I've been here. We knew [W&L] was going to make that run in the second half. They key was we didn't let them get away. That kept our confidence up. Then we shot well to close the door."

The outcome contrasted the current fortunes of the Maroons (11-11 overall, 5-9 ODAC) and the Generals (10-13, 6-9).

While the Maroons are suddenly playing their best basketball as the ODAC Tournament approaches, Washington and Lee is slumping badly.

The Generals have lost three straight and six of eight. They have dropped their past two games by a total of 55 points.

Roanoke's 61-point first half was the most productive of the season. The Maroons' previous high was 59 against LeGrange in December.

Craig Hatfield led W&L with 20 points and 14 rebounds, but he fouled out with 7:07 left. Mike Holton and Bryan Brading scored 15 points each.

The victory gave Roanoke a 37-36 advantage in the all-time series with Washington and Lee. The Generals are 1-17 at Roanoke since 1958.
