SYRIAN EDITORIAL URGES SADDAM'S `LIQUIDATION'

A state-run newspaper Saturday urged Iraqis to "liquidate" Saddam Hussein to spare their army from being crushed by allied ground forces.

Al-Thawra newspaper, in one of the strongest Syrian denunciations of Saddam, said the Iraqi leader was leading his troops to their death because they had no chance against the allies' advanced technology and weapons.

Syrian, Egyptian and Saudi Arabian troops are the main Arab components in the U.S.-led coalition arrayed against Iraq.

Information Minister Mohamad Salman denied the editorial reflected the official Syrian position. "It reflects only the opinion of the journalist who wrote the editorial," he said Saturday night. - Associated Press
