MAN, 19, HURT IN GANG ATTACK

A 19-year-old Roanoke man was in very serious condition Sunday night after being hit on the head with a stick following a fight at the Jamestown housing project.

Witnesses told police they found Kenneth Wayne Draper, of the 1600 block of Queen Ann Drive, lying face down in a pool of blood in his apartment around 4 a.m.

Police gave this account:

Draper had been in a fight with several people, including Joseph Howard Elkins, 19, of the 1700 block of Wise Avenue Southeast. As Draper ran into his apartment, the group started pelting the building.

Draper opened the door and was hit on the left side of the head by some sort of stick. He underwent surgery at Roanoke Memorial Hospital for a possible fractured skull.

Elkins, who was charged with malicious wounding, was in the Roanoke Jail late Sunday.

Police found knives and broken sticks in the area where the fight took place. They said two other people were arrested there and charged with being drunk in public.

\ Scissors used in stabbing

\ A 60-year-old man was stabbed in the jaw with scissors early Friday, police said.

Police found Robert Lewis Singleton lying on the floor of a blood-spattered apartment in the 700 block of Hunt Avenue Northwest. His condition was unavailable late Sunday.

Tonya Lenese Ballou, 23, of the 900 block of Hunt Avenue Northwest, was charged with malicious wounding. Police found two steak knives and two razor blades on the floor of the apartment.

\ Razor attack described

\ A 30-year-old Northwest Roanoke man had his throat slashed with a razor Saturday, police said.

Fabian A. Martin, 30, of the 800 block of Fairfax Avenue, told police a man and a woman approached him as he emerged from an alley off Eighth Street Northwest. When he denied having money, the woman cut him across the throat.

Police said they were told the two assailants left in a gray vehicle with its rear window broken out. The woman was wearing what appeared to be a black beaver hat.

Martin's condition was unavailable late Sunday.

\ Man clubbed with brick

\ A 53-year-old man was hit with a brick in Southwest Roanoke Sunday morning after telling several people he had no money.

Paul Junior Wilson said two men and two women approached him about 12:30 a.m.; one woman hit him with the brick and all four kicked him. He was treated at a Roanoke hospital for a possible broken nose and a knot on his head, police said. - Staff report
