AUSTRIAN KILLS SELF IN APPARENT WAR PROTEST

A 68-year-old Austrian woman shot and killed herself in front of the U.S. Embassy Sunday in what police called a protest against the war.

The woman, a Viennese pensioner identified only as Herta R., shot herself with a pistol on the sidewalk opposite the embassy and died later in Vienna's General Hospital, said a police spokesman. He demanded anonymity in line with police rules.

He said police had found a note clenched in the woman's hand, citing the Gulf War as the suicide motive.
