VF CORP. REPORTS 1990 INCOME HALVED

VF Corp. of Wyomissing, Pa., parent of Bassett-Walker Inc. of Martinsville, on Tuesday reported 1990 net income of $81.1 million, less than half the $176 million earned a year earlier. Sales came to $2.6 billion, up 4 percent from $2.5 billion.

In the fourth quarter, VF said it lost $9.9 million, mainly because of plant closings and reorganization of the administrative staff at its Lee Co. subsidiary. Sales for the quarter were $688 million, up 4 percent from $663 million in 1989's final quarter.

VF also said it has signed an agreement to acquire most of the assets of Health-tex Inc., a Cranston, R.I., maker of children's clothing and owner of a Danville plant. - Staff report
