W&M CUTS FOUR VARSITY PROGRAMS

State budget problems have forced William and Mary to cut four of its varsity sports programs, school officials announced Tuesday.

The programs being cut next fall will include women's basketball, men's wrestling and men's and women's swimming, athletic director John Randolph said in a prepared statement. About 100 students, coaches and support personnel will be affected.

President Paul R. Verkuil said the move was made necessary by a college-wide budget reduction, but that it reflects the ongoing review of the financial health of intercollegiate athletics at the school.

"We have been forced by the budgetary realities that now exist in the Commonwealth of Virginia to make reductions everywhere on campus," Verkuil said. "This reshaping of the athletic program has been accomplished in a very responsible manner, with the best interests of the college and its students in mind."

The cuts are expected to save the school about $300,000. William and Mary, an NCAA Division I school, will be left with 21 varsity sports. - Wire report
