REBELS' RALLY ISN'T ENOUGH

For the second straight road game, the Roanoke Valley Rebels watched a huge third-period rally come up short Wednesday night.

The Rebels, who rallied from a 5-0 deficit at Hampton Roads last Saturday before losing in the final seconds, scored four goals in the final 20 minutes, but it went for naught in a 6-5 loss to the Erie Panthers.

The victory moved Erie (24-22-3) into fourth place in the East Coast Hockey League's Eastern Division, one point ahead of last-place Roanoke Valley (22-24-6).

Sparked by two goals each by Scot Johnston and Alex Daviault, the Panthers scored five times in the second period to take a 6-1 lead.

Seemingly out of the game with only 7 1/2 minutes left, the Rebels stormed back, scoring four goals in a span of 4:08.

In the game's final minutes, the Rebels had a chance to tie on the power play, but Erie goaltender Craig Barnett slammed the door.

\ ICE CHIPS: Brian Bellefeuille had two goals and an assist for Roanoke. Steve Gatzos and Rob Wilson had a goal and an assist each. Ron Jones netted the other Rebel goal. . . . The loss was the Rebels' third straight. They have lost six of their last seven on the road. . . . Battling for a playoff spot with only 12 regular-season games to play, the Rebels open a crucial three-game homestand on Friday against Johnstown. Hampton Roads visits the Vinton LancerLot on Saturday.
