AIRLINE FAILURES AND UNCHECKED PAY

ROANOKE and the surrounding area lost a good service when it lost its latest airline. People who gloat over the demise are inconsistent in their thinking of what capitalism really means.

The community itself needs to better understand what is necessary for the protection and implementation of transportation services in order to attract companies that will act in a friendly competitive spirit. There is no reason to assume there cannot be low-cost transportation from Roanoke.

Samuel Skinner of the Department of Transportation reported that the bankruptcy of airlines is caused mainly by not keeping salaries in check.

On a recent radio program from Chicago, a junior captain of American Airlines reported that he participated in a "sick-out" because he wanted a higher salary. When asked why, he stated that a competitor (Delta) paid junior captains more. He admitted that he was making $166,000 per year and working only 52 hours a month.

American enterprise needs to listen to management and take suggestions from those people who manage in behalf of those who labor under them.

The same is true for education. Everyone has something to contribute to an organization. Nothing is achieved by verbal abuse or attacks on others.

When Roanoke seeks another airline, it should try to pave the way. Hopefully it will seek a low-budget airline that is service-oriented, perhaps one where simple things matter more than the deluxe. That may give more people the opportunity to travel who have found it impossible under high ticket prices. HAROLD WILLIAMS JR. MARTINSVILLE
