RELIGION BRIEFS

TABERNACLE BAPTIST CHURCH in Salem is changing its scheduling of Communion to include a monthly celebration that will alternate between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. services. The Rev. Billy White, pastor, said moving the Lord's Supper service to Sunday nights half the time will give more time to focus on a major act of Christian worship.

\ ST. PAUL'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH in downtown Salem has scheduled two Sunday night programs in Lent. They will begin at 6 with potluck supper. Sunday the Emory & Henry College Concert Choir will present a free concert of sacred music. On March 3 the Rev. Rob Marshall, a British clergyman and journalist from Bradford, Yorkshire, will speak.

Call 389-9307 for details about other Lenten programs including a prayer and praise service Tuesdays, Thursday Eucharist and Wednesday Bible study at a breakfast at 7.

\ UNITY OF ROANOKE VALLEY, because of a rise in expenses and shortfall in donations, is reducing its paid staff. The jobs of bookstore manager and full-time maintenance aide have been eliminated. Earlier the administrator left Unity for another job. Her duties will be assumed by an office manager. Contributions are being sought to continue printing the monthly NewSpirit publication.

Work, however, is continuing on a youth activities building that is expected to be open by Easter.

\ BETH ISRAEL SYNAGOGUE has been recognized by the United Synagogue of America's Seaboard Region for organizing a High Holidays food gifts project for military personnel in the Near East. Undertaken in September, soon after troops began to go to the Persian Gulf area, the shipment has received many thanks from recipients.

\ THE REV. EDD PRATHER, pastoral assistant at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church for the past nine months, has left the staff. He is moving to Chicago to be near a family member who is ill.
