UNC FRONTCOURT DOMINATES TERPS

Maryland's press was no match for North Carolina's poise in the Tar Heels' 87-75 ACC basketball victory Saturday.

Rick Fox scored 19 points as eighth-ranked North Carolina dominated the inside and wore down Maryland in the second half. Most of the Tar Heels' points came on layups, many after they eluded the Terrapins' pressing tactics.

"If you don't get the ball up quickly, their press will kill you," said North Carolina guard King Rice. "We wanted to beat the press and punish them."

Pete Chilcutt scored 10 of his 14 points in the second half, including six in a 15-8 run that gave the Tar Heels a 62-53 lead with 12:52 left. North Carolina built the margin to 14 points and coasted.

"We got some very good shots," said Tar Heels coach Dean Smith. "Of course, we got some good shots against their press - a lot of layups. I thought we attacked their press very well and were able to get open shots."

Said Maryland coach Gary Williams, "We tried, but you can't jump higher than you can or you can't bring a seven-footer in if you don't have one."

George Lynch scored 12 points for the Tar Heels (19-4 overall, 8-3 in the conference), who won their fourth straight.

Maryland's four-game home winning streak was ended.

Kevin McLinton led the Terrapins (13-11, 3-8) with 21 points, and Cedric Lewis had 20.
