The Lions won the honors in Division I while the Bulldogs won the award for Division II. The judging was handled by the officials who worked all Super Bowl games. They graded the conduct of the players, coaches, cheerleading squads and fans.
Presentation of the awards was made during a recent meeting of the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce's Youth Sports Committee, sponsor of the Super Bowl.
Jim Carroll, chairman of the committee, made the presentations to football coach Dwight Bogle and cheerleading coach Robin Strosnider of the Lions and to football coach Bill Allen and cheerleading coach Debbie Ratcliff of the Bulldogs.
The awards are in memory of Kelley, who was a chamber official and an active leader in Roanoke-area sandlot sports.
Carroll also announced that the 1990 Super Bowl netted a profit of $6,329 to be shared by the five communities that had teams in the event.
Carroll said despite a postponement because of rain, the Super Bowl raised more money in 1990 than 1989. Although gate sales were lower, he said, ticket sales from the teams increased.
The funds are shared according to the number of teams that each locality had in the competition. Checks were presented to the following recreation officials - Alisa Barnette of Roanoke, 19 teams, $2,215; Bob Guthrie of Roanoke County, 14 teams, $1,645; Rudy Hahn of Salem, 13 teams, $1,519; Ken Myers of Botetourt County, five teams, $569; and Quentin Murphy of Bedford County, three teams, $379.
Charlie Hammersley, a committee member, presented a special award of a desk clock to Margaret Baker of the chamber for her service to the committee and to the Super Bowl.
The committee also set the first weekend of November for the 1991 Super Bowl. First round games will be played at various fields in the valley. The championship games will be played at Salem Stadium Nov. 9 and 10.
