TOASTER-OVEN FIRE DAMAGES APARTMENT

A fire sparked by an overheated toaster oven charred a kitchen Wednesday night at Hickory Wood Apartments in Northeast Roanoke.

District Fire Chief Garry R. Basham said about 12 firefighters and three trucks were called to the 7 p.m. blaze on Ashwood Circle just south of U.S. 460.

Basham said smoke spread through the six-apartment building. While some people were evacuated, no one was hurt.

The kitchen was in a bottom apartment of a three-story building. Firefighters worked for about 10 minutes to bring the blaze under control.

Basham said the resident had used the toaster oven and left home. The oven, which had a timer, was destroyed.

Damage to the structure was estimated at $50,000.
