John Sherman Cooper, 89, one of the most respected Republican political leaders of his time and former diplomat and U.S. senator, died of cardiac arrest Thursday at his home in Washington.

Cooper served as a delegate to the United Nations and ambassador to India and East Germany under three different presidents. He also was a member of the Warren Commission that investigated President Kennedy's assassination.
