MARION CLINCHES HIGHLANDS

Marion clinched the Group AA Highlands District regular-season boys' basketball championship Friday night, building a 16-point halftime lead and coasting to an 82-48 victory against Gate City.

The win put the Scarlet Hurricane (19-2 overall, 9-1 Highlands) into the Region IV tournament, and Marion will be the host school for the district tourney next week.

David Keith topped four double-figure scorers for the Hurricane, which led 40-24 at halftime.

Tunstall (10-11, 9-9) played Laurel Park close despite the absence of Terrence Carter and 6-4 Tory White. Tunstall started two freshmen and did not have a senior in the first five.

Lemont Wells led the Lancers with 26 points. Odell Hodge added 24 and Lloyd Hairston 20, including four 3-pointers. Wells had 21 rebounds, and Hodge had 18 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Kevin Brady's 3-point shot at the buzzer for Holy Cross sent the game into overtime, but the Martinsville team ran away in the extra period. Justin Mutch controlled the ball, made four of five free throws and a basket as the Lynchburg team was outscored 10-2.
