HOKIES BLANKED 1-0 IN BASEBALL OPENER

Cameron Browder's ninth-inning single plated the game's only run as UNC Charlotte nipped Virginia Tech 1-0 Monday in the Hokies' baseball season opener.

After 8 1/2 scoreless innings, Mickey Curry led off the UNCC ninth with a single off loser Brad Clontz (0-1). Curry advanced to second on Clontz's errant pickoff attempt, then scored on Browder's single.

Left-hander Doug Cox (1-0), in his first collegiate start, fired a four-hit shutout, striking out 10 and walking two. The Hokies got their leadoff man on base in each of the last four innings, but couldn't produce a run.
