WILLIAM H. TAFT III DIES OF CANCER AT 75

William Howard Taft III, a former ambassador to Ireland, died Saturday of prostate cancer at his home in Washington, D.C., his family said. He was 75.

Taft, whose grandfather was the 27th president and a chief justice of the United States and whose father and brother were senators, taught English before entering the diplomatic service. He was ambassador to Ireland from 1953 to 1957 and a member of the State Department's policy planning staff until 1960, when he became consul general in Mozambique.
