BEDFORD RECREATION GETS CASH

The Bedford Board of Supervisors unanimously agreed Monday to give the county recreation commission an extra $13,812 from contingency funds.

About $3,000 of that will pay for increased worker's compensation, wages and other expenses.

The rest will pay for unexpected costs in youth league sports. The department's youth basketball, baseball and softball programs had an unexpected increase in the number of teams this year, county officials said.

This year, the county budgeted $257,000 for recreation.

In other business, the supervisors decided not to seek competitive bids for operation of the landfill.

L.J. Bays Inc., which has run the landfill since it opened, will be allowed to negotiate a new contract without competition, the supervisors agreed. Under normal circumstances, the county would have to accept sealed bids.

Chairman A.A. "Gus" Saarnijoki said operation of the almost-full landfill was an exception because it required "special operation" to maximize its use before a new landfill is opened in 1993.

"Mr. Bays has been in on the planning out there and knows what needs to be done," Saarnijoki said. "From the county standpoint, it would be desirable that Mr. Bays operate the landfill."

"If anybody knows where the trash is out there, it's Mr. Bays," said Supervisor Calvin Updike.

The board still will need to approve a new contract with Bays. It will consider one at its March 11 meeting. Bays' contract runs out June 30.
