L.L. BEAN TO STOP MAILING FOR FREE

L.L. Bean is ending its 79-year tradition of shipping merchandise for free. The mail-order outdoors outfitter says it cannot afford to absorb increased delivery costs. Starting this summer, the company will add a flat $3.50 charge to each order, regardless of how much a customer buys, spokeswoman Catherine Hartnett said.

L.L. Bean expects rate increases by United Parcel Service and the U.S. Postal Service to add about $13 million to its $37 million a year postage and delivery costs, she said. Bean also has dropped 16 million from its 116-million catalog mailing list. - Associated Press
